Liam really didn’t feel much like studying today. At this point, he’d be happy if he could go the rest of the weekend without seeing another book in front of him. How scholars could spend their entire lives studying was beyond him, but they probably felt the same way about the things he did.

He stood in the backyard and practiced his basic spell casting, even though he knew he could easily produce some sparks if he summoned the chanrod. That would be cheating though, and he doubted that Trentell would ever let him get away with using a weapon in her classroom. In fact, she would probably turn him in to Neklamoor on the spot.

“I thought I saw you out here.”

Liam didn’t need to turn around to know that it was Eva talking to him, not when he’d memorized her voice long ago. He did look over his shoulder to offer his foster mother a polite smile before turning ahead to get back to work. The air pressure shifted beside him, announcing that Eva had taken an interest in what he was doing. While he didn’t mind her presence, he did wish that she would offer him some space to work.

“Is there where you tell me that my footing is off, or my posture?” he sighed and closed his eyes in hope of finding the feeling of the spark spell.

“Shouldn’t be a problem as long as you’re not falling over,” she chuckled lightly and swept her hair out of her face. He knew because he was looking at the ground and saw her shadow, although he felt a bit cheated for not seeing the real thing. Whether women realized it or not, they were generally pretty damn hot when they fussed with their hair. “So, where are your sparks?”

“Probably stuck between my shoulder and my elbow,” he groaned and dropped his hands to his sides. “Feels like it, at least.”

“Your shoulders are just sore from holding your arms out for so long,” she sighed and patted his elbow to make him lift his arm again. “This isn’t the military. You don’t have to keep your arms straight out. It’s smarter to remain comfortable, actually, because that’s one less thing stealing your focus away from what you’re trying to accomplish. Act like you’ve got a book tucked under your arm, then turn your hand so that your palm is up.”

Liam did as she instructed, but he lost himself in the bask of her presence. Her perfume always set him off, but feeling the warmth of her hand on his arm as she repositioned him added another element. It wasn’t like before though. He had sex last night, so the need wasn’t present, even though the desire certainly was. It was something he needed to work on. Sure, it was fun to imagine them twisted up in the sheets. In reality though, it couldn’t happen, not if he planned on staying here long.

“Liam?”

“Sorry, bit too much going on up here,” he sighed and tapped his skull with his other hand.
